Mens Senior Team News - NPL2 Rd 28 vs Geelong Soccer Club
Brunswick City travelled to Geelong to play a do or die match where a win would would secure a position to play in NPL2 in 2020, and a loss would see us dropping into the new NPL3 structure. Geelong needed a win to leapfrog us, so the match had dire consequences for the loser.
At kickoff a sudden downpour created some tricky conditions, with Geelong having the aid of a strong breeze. In the 5' they rattled the crossbar with a long range effort which put Brunswick City on notice. The home team were really piling on the pressure, and with the help of a large home crowd they opened the scoring. Our defence really held up, and were were luckiy to go into the break only 1-0 down. The second half saw both teams creating chances, and Brunswick City were able to equalise from a fast break, with Nate Foster scoring in the 57'. Brunswick City was now in the box seat and began to dominate. Geelong SC's keeper was having a fine game, until a thunderous shot from defender Atay Ibrahim from a short corner found the back of the net. Brunswick City was now 2-1 up with 15 mins to play. Geelong now needed to find 2 goals, however Brunswick City finished the much stronger team with multiple chances in the final minutes. Final score 2-1 and NPL2 action for 2020.
Womens Senior Team - Rd 18
Our women played their final game at home on the 1st September and were fighting for 3rd spot. After falling behind 3-0 early in the game, they steadied and were able to claw one back. However Altona City proved to be too strong on the day and eventually won 5-2. It was a great season for the ladies with only 3 defeats for 2019.
Our captain, Macey McMillan won the top goal scorer award once again in the league.
